NCK Exam vs KMTC Exam: What's the Difference?
Many Kenyan nursing students use 'KMTC exam' and 'NCK exam' to mean the same thing, but they are two separate exams sat at different stages of your journey. Mixing them up causes real confusion about what to revise and when.
The KMTC Final Qualifying Exam (FQE)
The Final Qualifying Exam is an internal exam set by your training college, whether that is a KMTC campus or another NCK-accredited school. You sit it at the end of your diploma or certificate course.
It covers the clinical subjects you studied, such as medical-surgical nursing, midwifery and community health, using multiple-choice, short-answer and long-answer questions. Passing the FQE means you have completed and passed your training. Once you pass, the Nursing Council of Kenya sends you a message with a link to register for the licensure exam.
The NCK Licensure Examination
The licensure exam is the national, regulatory exam run by the Nursing Council of Kenya. Passing it is what legally allows you to practise as a nurse or midwife in Kenya and to be entered on the NCK register.
It is a computer-based exam sat at a designated examination centre. Basic and degree cadres such as KRCHN and BScN sit two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, while most post-basic specialties sit a single paper. Each paper runs for two hours and is made up of multiple-choice questions, and you must pass every paper to be registered.
The order you sit them
The path runs in this order:
- Finish your course and sit your college's KMTC Final Qualifying Exam.
- Pass the FQE, and the NCK sends you a link to register for the licensure exam.
- Register and sit the NCK licensure exam at your assigned centre.
- Pass every paper, get licensed, and you are entered on the NCK register.
