KRCHN vs BScN: Which Nursing Path Is Right for You?
Two students can both become excellent nurses on completely different routes. In Kenya the choice is usually KRCHN, the diploma, or BScN, the degree. Same profession, different entry grades, cost, and ceiling. These are the real trade-offs, without the sales pitch.
The short version
KRCHN is a practical diploma that gets you into clinical work faster and leans into community health. BScN is a longer university degree with more research, leadership and critical thinking, and it opens more specialised, teaching and management roles. Neither wins in the abstract. They fit different starting points and goals.
Entry grades
Your KCSE result is the clearest divider. The diploma usually needs a mean grade of C, with a C in English or Kiswahili and Biology and a C minus in Chemistry and either Physics or Maths. The degree wants a C plus mean, with a C plus in Chemistry, Biology, English or Kiswahili, and Physics or Maths. Strong diploma holders can also bridge into a degree later.
Time, place and money
The diploma runs about three to three and a half years at KMTC and other accredited colleges. The degree is about four years at a university placed through KUCCPS.
Cost is real. A KMTC diploma first year has been around KES 83,700. A nursing degree at a public university runs closer to KES 275,400 a year, more at some. Over the whole course that gap is large, so weigh it against how soon each path lets you start earning.
Scope and ceiling
Both let you practise as a nurse once you register. The degree widens the runway toward specialisation, nurse-practitioner roles, teaching and management. The diploma is a full career on its own and a recognised stepping stone: with registration and about two years of experience, KRCHN holders commonly upgrade to BScN.
If you are unsure, starting with the diploma and upgrading later is a normal route, not a compromise.
Same exam either way
Whichever you pick, you sit the NCK licensure exam to be registered, and it tests the same core clinical knowledge. So the revision is identical: practise real exam-style questions across every subject, and spend the most time on your weak topics.
